An independent commission investigating the mass shooting that killed 18 people in Maine last month moved Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, to seek subpoena power so it can obtain the military service records of the shooter.Matt York/AP The latest mass killing in the U.S. happened Saturday in Memphis, Tennessee, where a 52-year-old man is suspected of killing four of his female relatives and seriously injuring a fifth person in a series of shootings, according to police.

The man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on the run Sunday, authorities said. Officers said they found his body in his car following the shootings at three locations in Memphis that left three women and a teenage girl dead and another teenage girl critically wounded.

It was the country’s 38th mass killing this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 199 people have died this year in those killings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people have died within a 24-hour period, not including the killer — the same definition used by the FBI.

So far this year, the nation has witnessed the third-highest number on record of mass killings and deaths to this point in a single year. Only 2019 and 2022 had more mass killings. According to the database, there have been 570 mass killings since 2006, in which at least 2,971 people died and at least 2,029 were injured.

Here’s what happened in the other U.S. mass killings this year.
