Massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake hits near the United States' Alaskan Peninsula, causing tsunami advisory

A powerful earthquake which struck off the coast of the Alaskan Peninsula has resulted in a tsunami advisory being issued.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred late on Saturday evening (local time) about 88 kilometres southwest of Sand Point, a city on an island located near the Alaskan mainland.

The quake occurred at a depth of 32.6km and was shallow, according to the United States Geological Survey.
