Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable disease that typically causes mild, self-limited illness. Serious complications, including death, are rare, but are more frequent among older adults. Hepatitis A outbreaks associated with person-to-person transmission have been widespread in the United States since 2016. What is added by this report? During August 1, 2016–October 31, 2022, 27 U.S. states reported 315 hepatitis A outbreak–related deaths. Deaths peaked in 2019 and then decreased annually through 2022.
